Panchavadyam

Kerala's art forms extend beyond captivating dance-dramas. Panchavadyam, meaning "five instruments," is a thunderous percussion ensemble that ignites the senses. 

Traditionally associated with temple festivals, Panchavadyam features five meticulously tuned instruments: the Maddalam (deep-toned drum), the Ilathalam (high-pitched drum), the Chenda (cylindrical drum), the Kombu (buffalo horn), and the Cymbals.

Traditionally Theyyam performances start at night and continue till wee hours of the morning for a very engrossed audience.

Kalamezhuthu

Kalamezhuthu, meaning "floor writing," in Malayalam. It is a mesmerizing art form that transforms temple floors into vibrant and colourful canvases. 

It is a ritualistic art form of Kerala traditionally performed during the auspicious occasions and religious ceremonies. Natural pigments like rice flour, charcoal powder, and turmeric are used to create intricate designs and portray deities. 

It is kind of a religious rangoli which is normally found in other parts of India. The difference is that it is performed with the rhythms of various musical instruments like the ilathalam, veekkanchenda, kuzhal, kombu and chenda, acting as accompaniment.

Margamkalli

Margamkali is a joyful group dance by the Syrian Christian community.

Women dressed in colourful Christian clothes move in a circle, telling the story of St. Thomas. He' is the apostle believed to bring Christianity to Kerala. Their steps match the rhythm of sung stories.

Margamkali is a celebration of faith and heritage, keeping traditions alive for generations.

Oppana

Kerala's art forms include the heartwarming Oppana. 

This is a special dance performed by Muslim women during their weddings. Friends and family gather around the bride, dressed in beautiful clothes. They sing joyful songs and clap their hands in rhythm. The dancers move in a circle, celebrating the bride and her upcoming marriage. It's a happy time filled with music, laughter, and sisterhood. 

Oppana is a beautiful traditional art form of Kerala that welcomes the bride into her new life.

Thiruvathirakalli

Thiruvathirakalli is a joyous dance performed by women, especially during festivals like Onam and Thiruvathira. 

Dressed in beautiful traditional white sarees with colorful or golden borders, women come together in small groups. They sing songs and clap their hands, moving in a graceful circle around a lit lamp or the ceremonial 'villaku'. 

This traditional art form of Kerala, celebrates womanhood, marital bliss, and blessings for a happy married life.

Pulikkalli

Pulikkali, meaning "tiger dance," is a vibrant folk art performed during the Onam festival in Kerala.

Performers dress up as tigers and paint their bodies with bright stripes of yellow, red, and black, resembling tigers and leopards. They wear fierce tiger masks and dance to the rhythm of drums, mimicking the movements of these powerful animals with lots of energy.

To bring in an element of storytelling into this dance form, a person dressed as a hunter joins the dance, creating a playful story of a thrilling chase between the hunter and the tigers.

Pulikkali is an art form of Kerala, that celebrates the harvest season and the joyous spirit of Onam. It's a burst of energy and colour that fills the streets with excitement.

Kalaripayattu

Kalaripayattu, also known as Kalari, is an ancient martial art with a rich history in Kerala.

It is a unique way of fighting developed centuries ago, with specific weapons and techniques specific to Kerala. It is considered the "mother of martial arts" in India,

Training involves rigorous physical conditioning, focusing on strength, agility, and mental discipline. Interestingly, Kalaripayattu often incorporates traditional Ayurvedic practices for healing and overall well-being.

While powerful, Kalaripayattu is also known for its flowing, almost dance-like movements. Practitioners use various weapons like swords, daggers, maces, and even shields. Kalaripayattu continues to be practiced today, preserving its rich legacy.
